Teen & Adult (Ages 13+)

Resurgence Martial Arts teen and adult class sessions are for anyone wishing to learn the art of Tang Soo Do ages 13 years and older. Many of our students are family members and attend sessions together. Regardless of age, students learn the same material on the same floor. Teen and adult members are sometimes given additional training opportunities that youth students are not.

Korean terminology is used frequently by the instructors and students in order to help promote the Korean heritage of the art. Students are taught various aspects of the art through instruction, lectures, games and repetition. Physical techniques are taught in through repeated practice, demonstration, and explanation. In addition to terminology and physical technique, students learn about honor, obedience, respect, focus, self-control, brotherhood, confidence and even humility. These traits help develop leadership skills within the community while we provide students with a family-oriented setting.

Our instructors help students work toward their goals whether it be to learn their next pattern, pass their next exam, or to reach black belt. Techniques are taught to each student and reviewed from a number of certified black belt instructors. This serves as a check system to ensure that students are learning correct technique. Students also get to experience varying instruction styles for the same techniques to reduce frustration and promote growth and knowledge.

The program is based on attending two classes a week, and offer three possible classes for students. We run a rotating curriculum which allows instructors more overall time with students and the ability to provide more detail as needed. Students are scored on their performance during an 11-week session and two weeks of testing. Scores and promotions are based on individual achievement and milestones. We are a traditional Tang Soo Do school affiliated with the World Tang Soo Do Association and attend events twice a year with other schools from within the region, but we are not a competition-focused school.

It is important to note that the only expectation we have of new students is that they try. We hold no judgement on athletic abilities or personality traits - we've all been there at one point!

What To Expect

The Tang Soo Do program at Resurgence Martial Arts has a planned path from your first class and beyond. Each season has specific goals, drills, and patterns to learn to graduate to the next rank. Following our course plans is generally the goal, but sometimes instructors will address techniques or philosphies that need special attention. Season and class plans are designed to give students more time learning and practicing specific skills and to allow our instructors more time teaching each of those skills to the students. Our instructors are here to help push you to your fullest potential, but you know your body's limitations - always tell your instructor of limitations or injuries.

If you come to class expecting to exercise and sweat, you will not be disappointed. If you want to learn the philosophy behind our techniques, our instructors are there to answer your questions. If you want to have fun while learning martial arts, we encourage it! You get out of the classes what you put into them with effort and an open mind.

We have some information about what to expect for those who are first starting martial arts written up on our registration page. Click on over there to get some additional information about trial memberships and the first several weeks of classes.
